Meeting the producers (2)


Uravu is an NGO established in 1996 in Wayanad district Kerala. The organization intervenes rural parts of Kerala. Their main focus is resource enhancement & Eco restoration, Training women mainly in making bamboo products and other products with the natural materials available in the local area. 

With the help of Common facility center’s and women self help group, Uravu has trained the local community especially women in making bamboo products. The trainers from Uravu themselves are local people who underwent proper training in making bamboo products from universities like CBTC (Cane and bamboo training center),       NID (National Institute of design), IIT Mumbai. So through this collaboration program and the support of Government rural development programs, they have set up 25 micro enterprises in the district of Wayanad district so far.   
Uravu in connection with EXIM (Export Import Bank of India), Nabad (National Bank for Agricultural and Rural Development), and MSME (Micro small medium enterprises) gives training and thus being the root cause for setting up these Micro Enterprises.  



 
Uravu in association with the GATI commission of India tries to form these groups called as bamboo clusters. As on now Uravu has set up one bamboo Cluster in the district of Wayanad under which 19 units are functioning. All the clusters are free to make their own products and are encouraged to be independent.

Beautiful bamboo Masks, some smiles and some stare at you, Bamboo jewelry’s doesn’t glitter but splendidly colored, Bamboo Pen’s-Plastic free, Bamboo and Jute bags of different colors are some of the crafts produced by Uravu.
